So, I'm trying my hand at a new, original story. All I've written is a prologue laying the foundation for the later story, but I may make more, depending on how things go and my laziness. Anyways:

Deus Ex Machina

Act One: Convergence

Chapter 1
Contingency Plan

The end of World War II brought about an arms race of epic proportions. The Russians and Americans are now in the thicket of the Cold War, and each side is paranoid of a possible nuclear attack from the other side. The year is 1962, and President Kennedy is dealing with the Cuban Missile Crisis. Realizing that the Soviets have very real and very effective methods of launching a surprise attack on American Soil from locations such as Cuba, President Kennedy decides to shut down all negotiations with the Russians, in order to focus on internal protection against a possible nuclear catastrophe.

Under Kennedy’s presidency, Project “Contingency” was created. Simply put, Contingency was designed to protect the country from the Armageddon. The plan would consist of building above-ground domes, capable of withstanding a nuclear assault. The domes would be built out of an extremely durable, newly-discovered polymer capable of incredible feats of durability and insulation. The polymers were able to shield the inhabitants of each dome from the harmful heat and radiation of each dome.

Overall, 103 self-sustaining domes were created. However, with the nation’s population increasing exponentially each year, there simple was not enough room for everyone within the domes. Each dome was about the size of a large city, fully stocked with food, living quarters, and agricultural zones. The domes were populated via a screening process that selected those whose professions mainly lay within the realm of science and math; though, a large number of families whose main occupations were a bit more basic were also given places within the domes to take care the lesser jobs- making food, repairing damages, running stores. They all knew their place there was nothing special and why they were there, but none of them cared: they were just happy to have a place they could feel safe and secure should the curtain come crashing down.

The plan was completed in 1973, and the citizens of the domes were moved in as soon as possible. Negotiations with Russia were reopened, and the conflict was seemingly resolved. It appeared that the domes had been a waste of tax payer money… so far.

Chapter Two
The Closing Curtain

The year is 2033 C.E. Humanity is on the verge of an economic and ecological breakdown. Carbon dioxide and other aerosols have polluted the atmosphere to toxic levels across the planet. Global temperatures have risen to dangerously high numbers. The Northern and Southern ice caps have shrunken by thirty-five percent. Areas in Africa and South America have become inhospitable wastelands because of the heat. So-called “hyper-hurricanes” have devastated the coastlines of major countries such as the United States, Japan, Korea, and several European countries. It seemed humanity had finally reached the end of its rope, and it either had to prepare to fall to its doom, or find a new rope to climb.

Well, some scientists were doing just that. A new project was being spearheaded to create a machine that could give humanity a second chance on their first home. Interplanetary travel and colonization had been put on halt as mankind struggled to maintain its place on Earth, so fleeing to another planet was out of the question- there were barely enough resources to get a six-man crew to the moon and back. This new project was dubbed: “Deus Ex Machina”, God out of the Machine. And that’s exactly what it was: a super computer outfitted with several technologies with functions ranging from terraformation to devices designed for atmospheric purification achieved by breaking down carbon dioxide, collecting the carbon atoms, and releasing the oxygen back into the atmosphere. It truly was humanity’s last hope.

However, in 2040 C.E. a terrorist group calling themselves “The Last Generation” arose in a remote country in Europe. The group believed that it was humanity’s time to leave the planet- to die and claim the afterlife as its new frontier. At first, the group seemed harmless enough. It had no political backing, no weaponry, and only a handful of believers who could only go so far as starting riots and random acts of violence.

It wasn’t until 2045 C.E. that the terrorist group managed to infiltrate a Russian military compound and gain access to part of its nuclear stockpile. All the pieces had fallen into place. The stage was set for the final act in the play of human life…

At 8:57 P.M. on August 21, 2045 C.E., twenty-three intercontinental ballistic missiles were launched at the United States; even more were launched at locations around the globe. In standard military protocol, the United States fired a retaliatory barrage twenty minutes after it detected the warheads crossing the Atlantic. It seemed that the rope had snapped- the facility holding project Deus was hit directly by one of the ICBM’s- all the scientists working on the project were killed, and their work was decimated in a fiery ball of heat and radiation. As more explosions shook the world, it seemed as though humanity had fallen off its rope entirely, and was plummeting down to its death in the jagged rocks of extinction.

If you're going for an original story, go for an original title. That one is so cliche...

How is it cliche? It's a literary device used that signifies exactly what the machine is supposed to do.

Plus, practically any title I use could potentially be cliche in some way or form.

The title, as a phrase, is used quite a bit, I agree, but the meaning behind it is still very interesting. By the way, I like this so far and I will continue to read it.

So, a few things. The Prologue is now Chapter 2, this whole set has been renamed to Act 1: Convergence, and there may be one or two more chapters in it. The first act will mainly be the prologue to the main story, and all the chapters will "converge" to form the basis for it, as well.

This is just an experiment, so expect more changes.

That is all.
